PROCEDURES
Implantable Loop Recorder (ILR)
about the procedure
What are Loop Recorder Implants?

An Implantable loop recorder is a small device inserted under the skin of the upper chest. It is used to monitor electrical activity of the heart over a long period of time. An ILR may be advised by your doctor to determine if your symptoms (such as dizziness or fainting) are being caused by irregular heart rhythms.
Preparation
ILR insertion is performed in hospital as a day case.
You will be asked to fast before your procedure. Please follow the directions given to you by the hospital or administration staff at the time of booking your appointment.
Be sure to bring the following with you to the hospital:
- Your Medicare card
- Any concession, pension, or private health fund cards
- Your regular medications
- Please avoid bringing valuable items such as jewellery
computers, or wallets to hospital with you.
The Procedure
- Your ILR will be inserted under the skin, on the left side of your upper chest. The procedure takes around 15-20 minutes.
- Your doctor will inject local anaesthetic into the skin before insertion of the ILR. This can be a little uncomfortable, but the area will quickly become numb.
- You may have some stitches placed at the insertion site. A dressing will then be placed on your wound once the loop recorder is inserted. You will be asked to keep the wound clean and dry until it is healed. You will be able to shower and bathe.
Discharge
You will be discharged from hospital on the same day of your procedure. At this time, you will be given instructions on how to use your loop recorder as well as instructions for care of your wound at home.
It is important that you have a responsible adult pick you up from the hospital to take you home.
A follow up appointment will be arranged prior to your discharge from hospital.
